Laura P. Russell

Family Court Judge

Judge Laura P. Russell was appointed to the Jefferson County Family Court Bench in May 2023 by Governor Andy Beshear and took her oath of office on June 9, 2023. Prior to the appointment, Judge Russell was an attorney at Eddins • Domine Law Group, PLLC, and has practiced law for over two decades, the majority of which focused primarily on family law cases. Previously, she served as a staff attorney in Jefferson Circuit Court, Trial Commissioner in Jefferson District Court, and as an assistant Jefferson County Attorney.
 

As an Assistant Jefferson County Attorney, Judge Russell fell in love with family law and family court and loved how one court was singularly focused on families. She also witnessed first-hand how a judge’s decision has an impactful difference in families’ lives. As your current and newest family court judge, Judge Russell knows that she can make a daily difference in the lives of our families and does her best to make thoughtful and well-reasoned decisions. She understands that the decisions she makes impacts the lives of real people, families and victims.

Judge Russell received her undergraduate degree from Morehead State University
graduating magna cum laude with a degree in business administration, and her Juris Doctor from the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville.  Judge Russell formerly served on the Board of Regents for her alma mater, Morehead State University, where she also served on the audit committee. Judge Russell previously served as co-chair of the Family Law Section and was a former member and board member of the Women Lawyer Association of Jefferson County. Judge Russell was a volunteer for the LBA's pro se divorce clinic where she enjoyed working with low-income individuals filing for divorce in Jefferson County Court.  

Additionally, Judge Russell has volunteered her time with the Younger Women Club of Louisville, having served on the board and aspresident, her church, her child's school, and as a certified stroke and turn official for Kentucky and USA Swimming. She is married to Jason, a dentist, and has a 14-year-old daughter who is an avid swimmer. In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing pickleball,dining at local Louisville restaurants, and spending time with her family and friends.

Judge Russell is excited and committed to serving the families of Jefferson County as a family court judge and appreciates Governor Andy Beshear placing his trust and confidence in her.
